¿Asteroide? ¿Meteorito? Llamando a cada cosa por su nombre
La coincidencia en el tiempo el pasado viernes del paso cercano del asteroide 2012DA14 y el bólido observado en la ciudad rusa de Cheliávinsk, que, como no, ya tiene página en la wikipedia, ha puesto de actualidad la confusión de términos. Pablo Lonnie Pacheco, vía facebook primero y Universe Today, hoy han aclarado el tema y nos ha parecido interesante traerlo aquí. En versión resumida, para que resulte sencillo.
Cometa: Objeto proveniente, originalmente de la teórica nube de Oort. En su acercamiento al Sol se calienta y desprende materiales que a menudo dan lugar al desarrollo de sus características colas
Asteroide: Fragmento de roca, metal u otros compuestos o combinación de ellos, que órbita alrededor del Sol en órbita interior a la de Neptuno.
NEO (Near Earth Object): Asteroide que cruza la órbita de la Tierra y tiene, por tanto, encuentros cercanos con ella.
Meteoroide: Podríamos simplificar diciendo que se trata de un asteroide pequeño. Algunas fuentes ponen el límite en diámetro inferior a 10 m. Otras en 50 m.
Meteoro: Es lo que se conoce popularmente por estrella fugaz. Se trata del fenómeno luminoso que se produce cuando un meteoroide se quema al entrar en la atmósfera.
Bólido: Meteoro especialmente brillante y llamativo.
Meteorito: Fragmento de meteoroide recogido en tierra
